Veneers Q & A

What are porcelain veneers?

A porcelain veneer is a thin piece of porcelain that’s shaped to recreate the appearance of your natural tooth. Porcelain veneers are custom made to fit the contours of your teeth. Porcelain is a popular material for veneers because it’s stain-resistant and closely resembles tooth enamel. Porcelain is also highly durable, allowing you to chew, bite, and eat with confidence.

What are the benefits of veneers?

Veneers offer you a cosmetic solution for many issues, including:

  • Discolored or stained teeth
  • Misaligned teeth
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Gaps
  • Fractures
  • Chipped teeth

Veneers are a less-intrusive alternative to treatments like crowns and metal braces. Veneers allow you to enhance your smile in just a few visits.

How are veneers placed?

Placing your porcelain veneers takes multiple visits. Before you begin the process, Dr. Studer evaluates your oral health to ensure your teeth and gums are healthy enough to withstand the procedure. Your preliminary evaluation typically involves a physical exam as well as X-rays.

The first step of the procedure is to prepare your teeth for treatment. To make room for the veneer, Dr. Studer removes about half a millimeter of enamel from your tooth. This ensures the veneer fits properly and doesn’t appear bulbous or unnatural. It’s important to note that the preparation step of the procedure is irreversible — the tooth enamel cannot be regained after being removed.

Once the teeth are prepared, Dr. Studer takes impressions of your teeth and sends them off to a lab where your custom veneers are constructed. The all-porcelain veneers are made to match the shape, size, and color of your natural teeth. A temporary veneer may be placed as you wait for your veneer to come in.

The final step of the process is placing your custom porcelain veneer. Dr. Studer checks the size, shape, and color of the veneer to ensure it’s the perfect match. He then thoroughly cleans the veneer to prepare it for placement. Dr. Studer etches the surface of your tooth and the veneer to ensure it adheres securely. Veneers are permanently placed using a special dental cement that’s hardened using an ultraviolet light.

After placement, Dr. Studer may require a follow-up appointment to assess the success of the veneer and ensure it’s placed properly. To speak with the team about enhanc
